Tips Howto Make Good Blog Templates

Whatever blogging software or service you decide to use, all of them will present you with a generic graphic for the top of your blog pages. This is the single most important element that you need to change.

What you will need is your own image, and a font to create a simple title, tag line or logo. If you are not good at drawing or feel design-challenged, then go straight to one of the online stock photo services and splurge. There are also lots of free sites, or you can try a service with minimal fees, like istockphoto.com.

Simple Photo Borders That Make A Difference
When posting graphics and photos on your blog pages try adding a simple border to them by using Photoshop's stroke command. Not only will this help your photos to pop out from the page, but it will also add another design element for people to associate from your site.

What Is SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and for what people search. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Other, more noticeable efforts may include adding unique content to a site, ensuring that content is easily indexed by search engine robots, and making the site more appealing to users. Another class of techniques, known as "Black hat" SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove their listings.

The acronym "SEO" can also refer to "search engine optimizers", a term adopted by an industry of consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of clients, and by employees who perform SEO services in-house. Search engine optimizers may offer SEO as a stand-alone service or as a part of a broader marketing campaign. Because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML source code of a site, SEO tactics may be incorporated into web site development and design. The term "search engine friendly" may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.

Write article with style to attract visitor

The sheer number of blogs in existence makes a writer’s most difficult task distinguishing themselves from the pack. From an informational standpoint, this is practically impossible. Somebody, somewhere, is sharing the same knowledge you are, and odds are they’ve been doing it longer and have more authority. How then, can a beginning writer break through the wall of anonymity and attract a large audience?

The answer is style. Writing is an art form, and although it can’t be taught, it can be learned. Understanding the principals of this article will help you channel your inner author and attract a devoted following.

1. It’s All About You

Blogging is constantly referred to as the pinnacle of narcissism. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The driving force behind all great blogs is personality. There are thousands of sites posting marketing advice, but why does everyone read Seth’s Blog? It isn’t because we couldn’t find the information elsewhere, it’s because of Seth Godin. We trust Seth, but more importantly, we like Seth. That’s why we keep coming back.

Your personal charisma is the only unique aspect of your writing. Don’t hold back. Display your intelligence. Let your readers know who you are. Be brash, be funny, be controversial, but above all be yourself. Attracting an audience is about forming thousands of individual connections, one reader at a time.

2. Never Take the Conventional Angle

Unless you’re lucky enough to break a fantastic news story, the subject of your writing has already been covered. If you’re not going to say something different, don’t bother. People will read your redundant post and think, “Been there, seen that, not interesting, why bother reading again?” Summarizing what everyone already knows provides zero value to readers.

It’s always possible to take a different angle. Instead of agreeing with what’s right, find an aspect of conventional opinion you know is wrong and show everyone why. Use tangible examples from personal experience. Instead of taking the seller’s perspective, write as if you were a customer. It takes effort and creative thinking, but writing with a fresh perspective is the only way to create a user experience worth repeating.

3. Write With an Edge

Writing with an edge requires a degree of talent and courage few people possess. Don’t hold yourself back for fear of coming off as arrogant or aggressive. You may offend people but you’ll also gain admirers. At the very least, people will remember you. The worst possible reaction is no reaction at all.

Writing with an edge means writing with wit and eloquence. It means writing with fire and authority. It’s the only writing that leaves readers awestruck, eagerly awaiting every word. Don’t be afraid of your passion. Embrace it, nourish it, and your writing will leap off the page.

Tips on Making a Good Blog for Dummies

What do visitors see when they arrive at your blog?

You have seconds to make a good first impression. That first glance might make all the difference between a subscription and the loss of a return visitor.

Design makes a big difference, as in colours and graphics, but layout could make the biggest difference. What you put and where. Today’s tip: 10 minute blog tweaks that make a good first impression.

Your first job is to download and install the Firefox Web Developer plugin. This allows you to view your blog in various resolutions. Set it to 800×600, 1024×768 etc.

What do you see? Anything on screen without requiring scrolling is considered “above the fold”. This is a phrase inherited from the newspaper industry. Anything above the fold is most likely to be seen and therefore is where you want important content.

Your layout should answer the following questions:

  1. Where am I? - Does your visitor have a clear idea where they have arrived? The first thing they should notice is your blog name. What does this tell them? Does it say “My Stuff” or does it say “Wallys Wonderful World of Widgets - tips and news from the widget world”. They need to know what site they have landed on and why they should care.
  2. Who are you? - You will find it easier to make a connection with your readers if you show them who you are. Put a picture in your sidebar, write an about blurb, sprinkle personal details in your posts. Read this from The Godin on name tags.
  3. What is here? - The visitor is there, now you need to feed them before they wander away. First of course should be the content they came for. Are your headlines and first paragraphs in view above the fold or have you pushed all your content down the page with superfluous navigation and advertising? Does the headline and intro pull the visitor into becoming a reader?
  4. Where now? - You have managed to get them to read your article, can you get them to stay? Help them with useful links and buttons. What good articles should they read next, where do they sign up for your newsletter or RSS subscription. They are not going to go searching, you need to put this stuff right where they can find it.

Get a second opinion - While most of us can see right away any issues in other peoples stuff, we are too close to our own to be objective. We all need a second, third or fourth opinion. Best of all is if you can get an expert opinion (thanks Liz! /wave) and feedback from a non-expert, someone like Grandma. Make notes on what they say or record the conversation.

It’s amazing the difference some small tweaks can make. Normally the problems with a layout are hidden beneath hundreds of tiny changes and delayed due to ongoing commitments and priorities. Take ten minutes to look with fresh eyes, your blog and readers will thank you!
